6 Signs That Your AC Needs Replacement
Sandium offers central AC replacement, home AC replacement, and AC system repair services. Identify the signs indicating it's time to replace your air conditioner.
Well-maintained and regularly tuned HVAC systems, on an average, can last for anywhere from 15 to 25 years as per a report by CNN which in this case can be trusted. However, this time frame depends on the type of air conditioner you have. You should start considering a replacement if any of the following rings true:
1. Your HVAC System is Older than a Decade
Not every HVAC system runs efficiently after the decade mark. It is important that your system be regularly tuned and maintained. A failure to do so will cause the unit to breakdown in the first few years. You should have your system serviced at least once a year if you want to prolong its life. In addition, different AC components have different lifespans. For instance, the air filter needs to be changed or cleaned once every three months.
2. Refrigerant Used is Freon
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), including hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are phased out since they burn holes in the ozone layer. R-22, Freon or HCFC-22 is included in the phase out. You may not find a supplier that stocks Freon when your refrigerant needs a top-up. It is easier to consider a replacement than hang on to the old one. This will also make your Northern California home more energy efficient and eco-friendly in the long run.
3. Multiple Compressor or Motor Breakdowns
Aging air conditioners are more susceptible to failed compressor and motor breakdowns. You may be shocked at the cost of repairs and components. Any responsible HVAC service provider will recommend a replacement rather than a repair. It doesn’t matter whether this is your first or second experience with a broken compressor, coil, or motor – it is easier and cheaper to have the entire system replaced.
4. Unusually Loud Sounds
Most types of air conditioners make sounds. This is usually during start up and cycling. However, your AC should not be making grinding, clunking or squealing sounds. This is a sign that you should get in touch with an HVAC specialist and have your system checked.
These are aggressive and scary noises that indicate that there is something wrong with the fans, motors, and blowers. However, this doesn’t automatically mean that you should replace the entire unit. However, you should consider getting a new system installed if the parts cost you in the thousands.
5. Issue with Installation
In an attempt to bring down costs, many homeowners choose for a DIY installation. There is nothing wrong with a DIY installation if it is done right. Installation issues is not just a cost factor – they are also safety hazards. Your HVAC unit can work at peak efficiency only when it is installed correctly. This means there needs to be proper sizing, electrical work and measurements done.
In addition, you need to keep in mind that wrongly installed air conditioners have shorter service lives. You don’t need to replace the system in this case. However, you should consider having an HVAC contractor inspect and re-install the unit correctly.
6. Frequent Repairs
Have you noticed an increase in the number of repairs over the years? This is a sure-shot sign that it is time for you to replace the air conditioner. It may be more expensive immediately to get an air conditioner replacement. However, you can always recoup the expenses in the long-term.
