HVAC systems are composed of multiple parts that must function in tandem with one another to provide you efficient heating and cooling in the house. Most systems, depending on their size and type, require elaborate ductwork to transport conditioned air throughout your Bay Area residence.
Ducts are not easily accessible, and hence, often go unchecked or uncleaned for long periods of time. Problems in the ductwork can remain unnoticed for a while and eventually grow into large repairs and replacements. Since it is not possible to see inside the ducts directly, you have to look for signs that indicate duct issues in your system.
These are some things you may notice if ducts are the source of your HVAC troubles.
1. Bad air flow
A problem in the ducts will restrict free movement of conditioned air throughout your house. This means that less or no air will reach the vents. Hence, your house will not be as cool as you would want it to be.
2. Musty smell and odors
As very less air reaches the vents and is released into the rooms, the house smells musty. Another problem of bad odors can come from ducts. If moisture collects in the ducts, or if there is a rodent infestation that hasn’t been cleaned, the air circulated through the ducts will carry foul smells with it.
3. Uneven temperature
If there is leakage in the ducts, you may experience hot and cold spots around the house. Leaky ducts will hamper even heating and cooling of your rooms. Leaky ducts are a common cause of HVAC issues.
4. Noisy system
Old ductwork can develop leaks and cracks over time. Air escaping through these cracks creates a hissing sound. If there are air pressure related problems, sheet metal ducts may make popping sounds. These noises indicate a problem in the ductwork.
5. Clogged filters
Faulty or unclean ducts can collect a lot of dirt and debris. This will in turn, clog your air filters too, resulting in air quality issues and unwanted temperature variations. If the air vents get clogged, warm air or no air may be released into the rooms.
6. Bad air quality
Apart from musty smells or foul odors, the air coming from faulty ducts can contain a lot of allergens, contaminants, pollen, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds). This polluted air will be pushed through the registers and circulate in the house, causing health problems and respiratory issues among residents.
How can you resolve these issues?
If you are able to quickly understand the indications of ductwork related problems, you can get repairs done soon. One of the main aspects to keep in mind is the design and size of the ductwork. Just like the HVAC unit, the size and design of the ductwork has to be appropriate for your home. The ductwork must not be undersized and the design should allow for smooth air flow in the intended direction.
Invest in regular duct inspection and cleaning, to avoid the build up of dirt, or the possibility of leaks.
