6 Common HVAC Problems And How to Fix Them

HVAC systems, whether they are new or old, can have issues from time to time, either due to use-related wear and tear or due to lack of regular cleaning and maintenance. Whatever the reason, if Northern California homeowners are aware of the different problems that can come up, and troubleshooting options, you can get your system up and running again soon and reduce inconvenience.

Here are 6 common HVAC problems and possible solutions to fix them.

1. Clogged filters

This is one of the most common issues HVAC owners face. Air filters in your HVAC system trap dirt and debris in air and keep it from entering your system as that could cause damage. Over time, all the dirt trapped on the filter clogs it and hampers smooth air flow. Bad air flow will put pressure on your system, increase your energy bills and also not give you proper cooling.

Clean or replace the air filters from time to time, to ensure uninterrupted air flow and comfortable indoor temperature.

2. Malfunctioning thermostat

The thermostat is the part that regulates the temperature around your house by relaying messages to the system, how and when it should function.

Usually, a malfunctioning thermostat is caused due to incorrect temperature settings, dead batteries, or a mechanical problem in it. Just changing the batteries or adjusting the temperature may suffice. Otherwise, an HVAC technician can inspect and repair the glitch.

3. Noisy system

Usually HVAC systems are silent. At the most, you will hear the compressor turning On and Off. But if you start hearing unusual noises like screeching sounds, hissing, or loud rattling, there may be a problem in the parts of the system. Worn or damaged belt, loose screws, debris in the fan blades, a faulty motor or duct leakage can cause weird sounds.

This needs to be checked by an HVAC professional and repaired as soon as possible to avoid further damage.

4. Dirty coils

Evaporator and condenser coils accumulate a lot of dirt and grime with use. If dirt forms a layer over the coils, it hampers heat transfer, and the coils will be less effective in removing or expelling heat from your house. System blowing warm air is also an indication of dirty coils.

Cleaning the coils must be done regularly by trained professionals. The condenser and evaporator coils are hard to reach and delicate as well. So, care must be taken during cleaning and maintenance.

5. Pilot light or ignition issues

A dirty flame sensor or burner can cause ignition problems for your furnace. Dirty parts often cause delayed ignition or pilot outage. Faulty gas supply can also result in ignition issues.

Fixing this issue means exposure to high voltage and natural gas. Hence, any inspection or repair work must be handled by trained and experienced HVAC professionals only.

6. Refrigerant leak

The refrigerant in your HVAC system absorbs heat and produces cool air. If the refrigerant is leaking, it will affect cooling and also increase energy consumption.

The leak would need to be repaired and coolant topped up.
