Beware of These 9 Most Common AC Troubles

It can be costly to repair air conditioners when there are massive breakdowns. You should schedule regular tune-ups and maintenance with experienced contractors for enjoying the best performance. It is important that you learn about common AC troubles to prevent huge repairs in your Bay Area home or business.

1. AC not switching on

It is possible that the thermostat batteries are not working. You should also check the thermostat settings to see if it is set to a desired temperature. Check the circuit breaker if the air conditioner is not switching on even when the thermostat is on. Your AC may not turn on if the circuit breaker has tripped. Flip the switch off and on to reset the circuit breaker.

2. No cold air

Dirty air filters can block the airflow and prevent your air conditioner from blowing cold air. Dirty air filters may also freeze the condenser unit and limit your air conditioner’s cooling power. You should change the air filter at least once a month.

3. Outside unit freezing up

Outside unit of the air conditioner can freeze because of several reasons:

  • Low outside temperature
  • Insufficient airflow
  • Low coolant levels
  • Stuck contractor
  • Blower motor troubles

4. Refrigerant leakage

Temperature can vary when the coolant in an air conditioner begins leaking. This can occur because of the following reasons:

  • High power consumption
  • Coil freezing
  • Low efficiency
  • Damaged compressor
  • Uneven cooling

5. Loud noises

Your air conditioner may make sounds when something is wrong with it. These are a few common sounds to watch out for:

  • Hissing sound is produced due to refrigerant leak
  • Clicking sound occurs because of a relay problem
  • Banging, rattling, or thumping sound occurs when there is a problem with the motor assembly or blower
  • Fan motor or compressor issues may produce a screeching sound
  • Buzzing sound is produced due to faulty electrical components

6. Evaporator coil freezes

Without sufficient air inside the air conditioner, the evaporator coil may freeze up. This can cause your system to stop working. Dirty air filters, blocked ducts, vents, and faulty fans can cause this to occur in the system.

7. Electric failure

Compressor and fan controls can wear out when you frequently switch on or off the air conditioner. The blower motor, compressor, and condenser fan motor are electrically connected to start the unit. Any problem in this wiring can prevent the system from turning on.

8. Water leaking from the air conditioner

It is normal for water to leak from the air conditioner on a hot or humid day. It is common for water to melt and leak when the unit is frozen due to temperatures less than 60 degrees. Other causes for water leaking include:

  • Improper installation
  • Blocked drain pipe
  • Dirty air filters
  • Low coolant levels
  • Broken condensate pan

9. Drainage troubles

Drain pipeline in your air conditioner can quickly become clogged with dirt, dust and algae. Mold, fungus and mildew can grow if water doesn’t drain properly. Bad odor and gasses can also permeate throughout your house. You need to make sure the drain line is regularly cleaned, maintained, and inspected to prevent this from happening. Air conditioners that are installed by inexperienced technicians may not be mounted level. This can create drainage problems.
